I love your map and data set. Are there trees with stories attached to them/. I wonder about this Cockspur coral tree?

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for your interest!

We don’t always have complete information about the history of each tree, due to the vagaries of historic record keeping.

This Cockspur coral tree is located within one of the Parterre gardens in Carlton Gardens, which is a World Heritage Site.

These garden beds were originally constructed in the 1880s but were not consistently maintained over the decades following, and were reconstructed between 2005-2009. It’s not known when exactly this tree was planted, though it was prior to the restoration. It is likely an older addition, judging by the girth due to coppicing, but most likely planted later than the 1880s.

Sincerely,

Melbourne Urban Forest Team
