The woodland is a planted oak wood, estimated at around 80- 100 years old, although the boundary trees are older, perhaps 200 years.
During the WW2, the woodland and adjacent land was used as a military hospital serving the American base stationed at Holton Airfield. Holton Hall Park was taken over by the Air Ministry and used by the American Air Force as living quarters for airmen. It was home to Zemke’s Wolfpack the famous American 56th fighter group, the 489th bomb group and later the 5th Emergency Rescue squadron. The airfield is now owned by Bernard Matthews, and processes turkeys.
There is a surviving substantial rounded Nissen hut on my neighbours land. On the woodland there are 5 areas of hard standing, believed to be where officers recuperated and the ruins of one single story building, probably a toilet.
