One of the great joys of Kinda being in the woods every day these spring days, is meeting the children and finding their enthusiasm to help. Neil Armstrong (he has the moon helmet) is one such, who said at one point of the day: “I like helping”
We started by cutting prickly blackthorn to put across the new planted willow, so when a muntjac, deer, rabbit came to munch on the fresh green shoots of the willow, their noses would meet a sharp thorn reminder to look elsewhere for food. Neil A helped with the cutting and dragging.
Despite the cold wind across the open land, we went to the community garden and planted 4 rows of potatoes, Vicky, Neil A, and I digging (sometimes helped by Bobji), Billy planting and all of us covering. That’s 40 potatoes sown, which may give 400 for us to eat come the harvest time. We added to the rows of earlies planted by Jim earlier in the week. The climbing mangetoute peas are just about surviving. No rain again. Must get the harvesting working.
Still with energy we attempted to plant the last of the willow that was rooting in the bucket of water. But the ground was already too hard. So Neil A went to get a tool he knew of, a long handled drill. It worked, and we planted a few.
It was a glorious Wednesday at Kinda. A sharp wind but sun warmed, and suddenly everyone was everywhere exploring parts of the wood they had not ventured to before. Ducks and dogs abounded.
