It has been a life’s ambition to grow asparagus, but that life has up to now been far too itinerant to plant and wait 5 years for fruition. At last that time has come, as I surpass my mother and fathers age, now at nearing 70 years on this earth, now I can say, I will be here, I hope long enough, to plant and harvest asparagus.
I think I first came across asparagus in Elpeth’s garden at Hoe Mill, from where she used to make asparagus soup with the tips she cut off, after we ate it with butter salt and black pepper. When i did my safari around the UK and stayed with Linda and Richard in Worshop, I remember confiding to Linda my desire to plant asparagus in my life. So Linda, here I am, I have achieved this ambition!
The plants (long roots) purchased from Dobbies, they rested in water for 10 days as I waited for rain. A smattering came, so I planted.

Yes, we have a drought. Same as last year. The walnut trees have burned inside the tubes. However the Mountain Ash survive well and more of them are the first of the 5,000 to emerge.
Meanwhile, the 100 vines have arrived, and are still loitering in water. The ground is too hard to plant them in, what will I do? Decision postponed until after elections.

Drought is tough. The shed not built to collect water. But the children, led by the energy and direction of Louise, transport water down.
