It was after the morning walk which merged into let’s do it and walk to Brantwood, in which I throught I’d lost both Michael and Bobji. Both found safe and sound we found a wood to meander in
Skelghyll Wood, and the Giants. I was only familiar with fir as a commercial crop, not here as full grown magnificent giants of trees. The Wellintonia I recognised (punching the soft bark) but these trees are strangers to me, Large, Douglas Fir, Cyprus,
The woodland at Skelghyll was created around 1860 by Victorian plant hunters, who planted over 150 specimen conifer trees – a wonderful example of a Victorian arboretum. Far to steep for Michael, but it gave me chance not to race up but get to know the tree from the bark. The skirt of where the tree became root into ground often impressive. Many small leafed limes, which I gathered indicated the original here was ancient woodland.
