Woods and Climate change.
Not just CO2 – Don’t forget water – trees transpire, reducing temperature, not just the shade.
In Germany only 12% of original remains.
Woods are climate neutral, they say.
Dead rotting trees don’t end up as CO2, end as humus, sequestering carbon. Not so with clear cut woodland,, as exposed to sun, fungi breaks down quickly, CO2 ends up in atmosphere.
Wood products average life is 12 years, books, wood made.
Replanted forests not particularly good for cooling. Spruce for example leaves darker, heat up more quickly. Max Plank research finds forestry practices in Europe, has contributed to global warming. 0,22 degrees F.
White cover is melting earlier and earlier. Boundaries of vegetation zones changing. Beevers are expanding their range north. Permafrost falls out more quickly. Trees are once again moving north. Trees capture CO2 and capture as wood.
Using wood not climate neutral, Plant more conifers, governments say. Plantations of Spruce, Pin, Douglas fir vulneraable to storms and beetle.
eg Drax UK company Wood, imports wood from South Estern US, wood pellets, to produce CO2 and water. Wood is still contsiderd carbon neutral. Aims to capture the Carbon to put bubbles in beer. Back in atmosphere.
