Forestry Commission Woodland Creation scheme

Trees were considered for private benefit. For own wood supply, for cattle shelter. Changing now to universal good. Biodiversity, flood reduction, Net Zero. We can pay the land manager for planting a wood, say Forestry Commission.

Role of trees in landscape – water. Flooding is going to increase, climate change predictions, cause surface water flooding. Trees have important role to play. Leaves of broadleaf tree – 25% evaporated, this never reaches the surface.
Tree roots, absorbing 1,000 litres a day for a mature oak.
Tree roots deep into the soil. Dead roots provide channels for water to perculate. Comparison between agricultural farm land, most water ran over surface of land, compared to woodland. Provides physical barrier to woodland floor, slowing the flow.

Dutch – planting of trees on agricultural land. Year 1, reduced to 60 units. Year 3, virtually no nitrate pollution.

Trees and Carbon

1 tonne of CO2 absorbed is a carbon unit
Carbon sequestration – removal of carbon di oxide from the atmosphere. Over the first 50 years of a woodland 3-400 tonnes per hectar.
The role the different land uses have in sequestering carbon. Eg plough less so not release carbon, eg if we eat less meat and reduce food waste. Do not add up to the role of trees in sequestering carbon. Nothing else better for land management. 21 Mega tones in total. However only good if we use the wood to replace carbon intensive material. eg concrete.

Forest commission set up to delivery timber after WW1. Today we import over 80%. We need to sustainably meet our needs today.
