Last laid by Alan, from Wenhaston, with his shaky hand, he taught me the gentle art of hedge laying. Paul reminded us, about it’s historic use, gently described by the National Hedgelaying Society, which when I first read, was heartened to see a woman among their midst. Traditionally to keep animals in or out, it was not common in grain growing East Anglia. But with increasing deer and muntjac it is a very effective way of protecting woodland or pasture from being eaten, for they are particuarly partial to the young shoots of fresh coppice.
