For the first year no coppicing, but just the safety work in the woodland: some ash with die back, an oak with die back and a coppice of a hornbeam. Plus work done on the south of the land, once again making safe the branches over the footpath.
The ash near the pond was hollow with hornet nests and habitat, a shame to loose it, but dangerously hollow. Paul came one day to fell the oak with the winch – just he and I that day, and he did it well, he has not lost his skill. Together with George and Jack we shared lunch together. Paul will continue to work with me in the wood, be my teacher and advisor. George and his young team will do the work, and it is a pleasure to work with them. Jack did a good reduction on the oak tree by the Pits – an experiement to save the otherwise struggling oak.
The bi stemmed ash by the cabin had some die back but it was more to let in light. It has given us some good ash for firewood. Two days work.
