As Radio 4 news declares this to be the warmest January on record, I have given myself this week as the deadline for planting, ending on Sunday – also Michael’s 90th birthday.
I’ve been enjoying these days, each one working on the land, planting, planning, marking, visualising beyond my life this growth of saplings to trees, reaching for the light, branching and budding, coming to leaf.
Chris has come for two days, and has been good company. I arrive early to find the work for him to do – it’s all in the planning as I hear Charlies voice in my ear.
The men are still here, working in glorious sunshine.
