Out of the 25 silver birches in the circle, only 2 survived this year of drought. We found some good saplings at a near by woodland, and lifted some, still with their hairs and roots and a nice bit of moist moss. With the help of Mini and Bobji, the great diggers, we began the task of replacing those lost. Richard reminded me of the care necessary, to water, and how different we were; I much more ‘it if survives it will be stronger’, he ‘lets give it all the chance we can to survive’. It’s great working together. A glorious October day of sun and shadow, (although the southerner Richard complained of the cold north wind!).
Fe and her mother joined us for a Sunday lunch, with pre-dog walk around land and pits culminating in an aperitif of woodland vodka and smoked salmon. It was another gathering of the 6 dogs and once again, I felt a great expansive joy of an only child at having these 6 bouncing lives around us.
