Sex lives of trees

Aged 63 I’m discovering and uncovering the sex life of trees. It’s a consequence of Lockdown of course, having the time and mind empty enough to dally on what’s in front of the nose.

The oak was the first, seeing the male catkins. Pedunculate oak with acorns on stalks and Sessile oak with stalkless acorns. Which one is this:

This week it was the search for the Ash tree with Keys.  Ash sex is total confusion, as one book succinctly informed. Some trees are all male, some are all female, some are male with a female branch and some are female with a male branch. Finally some are male one year and female another year. All this I learned today, as I went looking for an Ash tree with  Keys. Finally I found one along Sparrowhawk Road, clambering over briar.
