Resistance And Renewal: A Debate On Glyphosate

Is the ubiquitous herbicide, glyphosate, about to have its moment of reckoning? The Government’s renewal assessment of the chemical was expected in 2026. However, the UK is now negotiating a trade agreement with the EU. Dynamic alignment on pesticides regulation between the UK and EU puts the fate of glyphosate into question, particularly for pre-harvest desiccation. Meanwhile, understanding of glyphosate resistance and its negative human and environmental health impacts improves. Our interdisciplinary panel brings together academic, policy and farming views to ask: What is the true cost of another glyphosate approval? Are there real alternatives to glyphosate for nature-friendly farmers?

Amino acide invented 1950, in 1970 Monsanto discovered broad spectrum herbicide. As soon as 1996 pre-harvest use, exponential growth. Works by inhibiting a plant pathway Shekimay. No present in animals or humans. But also present in fungi and our gut micorbiom. Can Glyco inhibit our gut micro biom. Monsanto said as safe as table salt. A lie. Can cause oxydative stress. Can damange DNA, causation of cancer, nervous system, neuro toxicity. Also contains co-forumulants – adulants – which are also dangerous to human health. Science and regulators failed to address any of the co-formulants. We can ingest 1/2 miligame per body weight per day all our lives and suffer no adverse reaction.
In rates a far lower dose caused fatty liver disease. DNA damage. Latest study, Glyco caused cancers as well as co-forulants and oxydated stress. Non hodgkin lymphoma in humans.
Farmer – a whole system is built around a system of using Glyco: faster harvest etc. How can we do without it? Cover crop. Crimp roller, doesnot work for all. Black Grass, tough. Livestock ? Double harrow sow – lost moisture.

– Ban local council use (Europe does not use)
– Ban pre harvest desication.
– money from gov to help regen to move away
